About 20 minutes out of Sparks, NV, Amtrak E9 425, an ex-UP unit, is leading #6 East out into Nevada. Crossing Donner Pass the train was led by an ex-SP FP7, which was left in Sparks.
Conforming to SP's requirement that one of their former FP7 units lead the Zephyr over Donner Pass during "adverse" weather, #116 is leading two SDP40F's at Rocky Point, East of Alta, CA.
Amtrak's "rainbow" era was underway. SP 6446 would later become Amtrak #110.
